EN 605.482 GUI Development with the Java Foundation Classes

Emacs and JDE

Welcome to the world of Emacs, the only editor you'll ever need!

For those of you that are interested in doing development on your home PCs, but without having to buy an IDE, I have provided a single file, emacs_jde.zip which contains the following items:

This file is for convenience only, as both these packages are public domain. For details regarding licenses, documentation etc..., view the READMEs in each package and view the home site for each package below.

To use this file

  1. unzip it in the c:\ directory, where you will have a c:\gnu\emacs-21.1, c:\gnu\jde-2.2.9B7, and c:\_emacs entries when you are done.
  2. Then go to the c:\emacs-21.1\bin directory and execute the addtopm.exe program which "adds emacs to the program manager".
  3. You can then double click on the emacs icon to start emacs.

More information can be found on emacs at the Emacs on NT home page . Information on JDE can be found at the JDE site.

A pdf version of a emacs reference sheet is available. Also included is this html version of that same sheet, although not formatted as nicely.

In addition, I have included the official Emacs Reference Card from the Emacs distribution.
